Louisiana law
required female minors (under 21) to obtain consent from an older male family
member. In Catharine’s case, she

In
testimony Whereof, the appearer, he signed this consent together with the
Witnesses, and me the said Justice of the Peace, at the CITY OF NEW ORLEANS
this 7th day of April 1870.
